Belgium has a temperate maritime climate shaped by the North Sea, Atlantic weather systems, distance from the coast, and elevation. The country is small, yet the weather can feel surprisingly different between the Belgian coast, Brussels and the central lowlands, and the higher Ardennes. Winters are generally cool rather than severely cold, summers are usually moderate, and rain can arrive in any month. One thing is especially worth remembering: a Belgian climate average describes the background, not what every week will look like.

Across Belgium, the annual mean temperature is about 10.2°C. January is the coldest month nationally, averaging around 3°C, while July is the warmest at about 18.1°C. Elevation changes that picture. Annual mean temperatures fall to roughly 7.5°C in the High Fens and on some Ardennes summits, while the mildest parts of the country reach about 11.4°C.

Why Belgium’s Weather Changes Over Such Short Distances

Two forces explain much of Belgium’s regional climate: the sea and the land’s elevation. The North Sea softens temperature swings near the coast. Farther southeast, rising ground pulls temperatures downward and generally raises precipitation.

The North Sea Keeps the Coast More Moderate

Water warms and cools more slowly than land. That thermal lag gives the Belgian coast milder winters and cooler summer conditions than many inland locations. For mean temperatures, the coastal advantage in winter is roughly 1°C compared with low and central Belgium. During summer, the relationship reverses, with the coast often around 1°C cooler.

The difference becomes especially noticeable on sunny, hot days. A sea breeze can push cooler marine air inland, often affecting a strip roughly 10 to 20 km from the coast. The breeze tends to be most noticeable when large-scale winds are weak and inland temperatures are high.

Elevation Cools the Ardennes

Away from the immediate coast, mean air temperature falls by roughly 0.6°C for every 100 metres of elevation. The average temperature difference between the Belgian plains and the higher Ardennes plateaus is therefore around 3°C.

That may sound modest on paper. In winter, it can be the difference between cold rain in a lowland city and snow on higher ground. In summer, the uplands often provide cooler conditions than central or northeastern Belgium.

Belgium’s Three Most Useful Climate Regions

Formal climate maps contain many local variations, but three broad regions explain most of the differences that residents and visitors actually notice.

The Belgian Coast

  • More noticeable marine wind
  • Smaller seasonal temperature swings than inland areas
  • Generally low precipitation totals compared with Belgium’s highlands

Places such as Ostend, Knokke-Heist and De Panne sit directly under the marine influence. A warm inland forecast does not always translate into equally warm beach weather.

Low and Central Belgium

  • A middle ground between the coast and the uplands
  • Clear seasonal changes without a strongly continental climate
  • Warm summer spells are more noticeable than at the coast
  • Snow occurs, but persistent snow cover is not a dependable winter feature

Brussels, Ghent, Leuven and much of the central part of the country broadly fit this pattern, although local differences remain. The long-running Uccle weather station in the Brussels area is often used to describe Belgian climate trends, but Uccle data should not be mistaken for a national average.

The Ardennes and High Fens

  • Snow can remain on the ground longer than in lowland Belgium
  • More pronounced effects from hills, plateaus and slope exposure

The High Fens stand apart most clearly. They contain some of Belgium’s coolest and wettest locations, with annual precipitation approaching 1,400 mm in the wettest areas.


Spring in Belgium: A Season of Fast Transitions

Belgian spring runs from March through May meteorologically, but the change rarely follows a smooth line. A mild afternoon can be followed by a cold night, especially early in the season. Sunshine, showers and short warm spells can all appear within a compact period.

March: Winter Loosens Its Grip

March brings a clear increase in daylight and the first regular signs of spring, yet cold air can still return. Frost remains possible, particularly at night and away from the milder coast. Higher parts of eastern and southeastern Belgium can hold onto wintry conditions longer.

April: Mild Days, Sharp Swings

April often delivers some of Belgium’s most noticeable day-to-day contrasts. Bright, dry weather can settle in for a time, then give way to cooler air or showers. Interestingly, when precipitation is averaged across the entire country, April is normally the driest month, at around 50 mm. That does not make April reliably dry on any particular visit.

May: Longer Days and More Stable Warmth

By May, daylight is long and vegetation is fully active. Afternoon temperatures become more comfortable, while late cold spells become less common. Coastal areas can still feel notably cooler when a sea breeze develops.

Spring also shows one of the clearest long-term temperature shifts in the Uccle record. The 1991–2020 spring temperature normal is about 1.5°C higher than the 1961–1990 normal, a larger rise than in the other seasons.

Summer in Belgium: Moderate Averages Can Hide Hot Days

June, July and August form Belgium’s meteorological summer. National averages suggest mild to warm conditions rather than relentless heat, and that is usually a fair description. Yet averages can hide short periods of very hot weather.

July, the warmest month nationally, has an average temperature of roughly 18.1°C. This is a monthly mean rather than the expected daytime high. Temperatures can rise above 25°C during settled summer weather, and 30°C or more is entirely possible during hotter episodes.

June: Long Days and Early Summer Warmth

June combines some of the year’s longest daylight with generally moderate temperatures. Warm spells can occur, but prolonged heat is less dependable than the calendar might suggest. Rain and thunderstorms remain possible because Belgium does not enter a true dry season in summer.

July and August: Belgium’s Warmest Period

July and August bring the greatest chance of hot afternoons. Inland locations can heat up quickly during calm, sunny weather, while the coast may stay much cooler under marine influence.

A striking example came on 2 July 2025. At 15:00, Middelkerke on the coast measured 18.1°C while Diepenbeek in inland Belgium measured 38.0°C. The difference was 19.9°C at the same hour in the same country. It was an unusually sharp contrast, but it neatly shows how powerful the sea-breeze boundary can become.

Hot Weather Is More Common Than Older Climate Norms Suggest

At Uccle, the older 1961–1990 climate period averaged about 20 summer days per year, meaning days with a maximum temperature of at least 25°C. For 1991–2020, the average is about 30 days. Days reaching at least 30°C rose from roughly 2 to 5 per year between those same periods.

So, is a Belgian summer cool? Sometimes. Mild stretches remain normal, especially near the sea, but it is no longer sensible to treat very warm or hot weather as an odd exception.

Autumn in Belgium: The Season Changes Unevenly

September, October and November do not feel like three versions of the same season. September can preserve a clear summer character. By November, short days, cooler air and frequent cloud can make winter feel close.

September: Summer Often Lingers

September frequently offers mild temperatures, especially during its first half. Daylight decreases quickly, though, and nights become noticeably cooler. The sea retains warmth longer than the land, so the coast can remain relatively mild into early autumn.

October: The Shift Becomes Obvious

October brings shorter days, lower temperatures and a stronger autumn feel. Windy or wet spells become more noticeable. Bright, calm days still occur, but the seasonal balance has shifted.

November: Cool, Dark and Often Damp

By November, daylight has contracted sharply and sunshine can become limited during cloudy periods. Frost is possible inland, while rain remains more common than snow across the lower parts of Belgium.

Winter in Belgium: Rain Is More Dependable Than Snow

Belgian winters cover December, January and February. In Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and other lowland cities, winter usually means a mixture of chilly air, cloud, rain, occasional frost and intermittent snow rather than continuous frozen conditions.

January is the coldest month nationally, with an average temperature of around 3°C. Coastal districts tend to be milder because of the North Sea, while the Ardennes and High Fens are colder.

Where Snow Is More Likely

Higher eastern and southeastern terrain gives snow its best chance of settling. The High Fens are the clearest example. There, colder temperatures and higher precipitation totals allow snow cover to persist for periods that would be unusual in much of lowland Belgium.

Uccle’s 1991–2020 normal is about 17 snow days per year. The wording matters. A snow day means a day when precipitation falls partly or entirely as snow; it does not mean that the ground remains snow-covered for 17 days.

Snowfall and Snow Cover Are Different Measures

  • Snowfall day: snow is observed falling during part or all of the day.
  • Snow cover: snow remains lying on the ground.

A brief shower can count as a snowfall day even if streets and fields remain bare. This is one reason raw snowfall-day numbers can make lowland winters sound snowier than they feel.


Rain in Belgium Does Not Follow a Simple Wet Season

Belgium has no tropical-style rainy season followed by a dependable dry season. Precipitation occurs throughout the year. Nationally, the annual normal is around 910 mm, but location matters far more than that single figure suggests.

The driest normal annual totals are close to 700 mm in northern Haspengouw. The wettest locations in the High Fens approach 1,400 mm. In other words, normal yearly precipitation almost doubles between Belgium’s driest and wettest areas.

Relief Explains Much of the Rainfall Difference

Higher terrain tends to receive more precipitation as moist air rises and cools. Slope orientation also matters because Belgium’s rain-bearing airflows frequently arrive from the southwest. This creates local differences even within the wetter southeastern part of the country.

Averaged across Belgium, winter receives the most precipitation and spring the least. December averages about 100 mm nationally, while April averages about 50 mm. Yet even those figures do not create a clean wet-versus-dry calendar. A dry December or rainy April can still occur in an individual year.

Daylight and Sunshine Tell Two Different Stories

A long day does not guarantee a sunny day. Daylight is the astronomical time between sunrise and sunset. Sunshine duration measures how long direct sunlight is actually recorded.

This distinction matters in Belgium. Around the June solstice, Brussels receives roughly sixteen and a half hours between sunrise and sunset. Around the December solstice, the window shrinks to about eight hours. Cloud can reduce actual sunshine to a much smaller fraction of that daylight period.

The practical effect is easy to notice: June evenings stay light for a long time even after a cloudy afternoon, while a heavily overcast winter day can feel short well before the sun officially sets.

Wind, Cloud and the Temperature You Actually Feel

The number on a thermometer does not tell the whole story. A mild winter temperature can feel colder in exposed wind, while a calm spring afternoon can feel much warmer than its measured value suggests.

  • Wind: most noticeable at the coast and in exposed areas; it can sharply lower perceived comfort.
  • Cloud: limits daytime heating and changes how bright a day feels, especially in the darker half of the year.
  • Humidity: contributes to the damp feel often associated with cool Belgian weather.
  • Sun exposure: can make sheltered spaces feel considerably warmer than nearby shaded or windy locations.

A Month-by-Month Climate Calendar for Belgium

No calendar can predict a specific Belgian month, but the seasonal direction is fairly clear. This table describes the normal progression rather than a forecast.

Belgian Climate Averages Can Hide Very Different Years

A 30-year climate normal is useful because it smooths out unusual years. Belgium provides a clear example of why that matters. Two consecutive years can produce remarkably different rainfall totals even at the same weather station.

2024 Was Exceptionally Wet at Uccle

Uccle received 1,170.7 mm of precipitation in 2024, compared with a 1991–2020 normal of 837.3 mm. It was the highest annual total measured there since observations began in 1833. Rain fell on 209 days, while the normal is about 189.8 days.

The record was not simply a case of rain falling every day. Heavy-rain days played an important role: 2024 produced 11 days with at least 20 mm of precipitation at Uccle, compared with a normal of about 5.1.

2025 Swung Strongly in the Other Direction

Only one year later, Uccle recorded 620.6 mm, the lowest annual precipitation total of the current 1991–2020 reference period. That total fell across 145 precipitation days.

Temperature told a different story. The 2025 mean at Uccle reached 12.0°C, compared with an 11.0°C normal, placing the year jointly fourth warmest there since measurements began in 1833.

July 2026 Shows How Far One Month Can Depart From Normal

July 2026 at Uccle was unusually warm, dry and sunny. The mean temperature reached 20.9°C compared with an 18.7°C normal. Only 10.6 mm of rain fell, against a normal of 76.9 mm, and measurable precipitation occurred on just three days.

Sunshine reached 307 hours and 51 minutes, well above the normal 203 hours and 14 minutes. The month is a useful reminder: a climate normal describes what tends to happen over decades, not a ceiling or a promise for any individual month.

Belgium’s Climate Has Become Warmer

Long-running measurements at Uccle show a clear temperature shift. Compared with the 1961–1990 climate period, the 1991–2020 annual mean is about 1.2°C warmer. The change is not distributed equally across the seasons: spring shows a rise of about 1.5°C, while autumn shows a smaller increase of about 0.8°C.

Temperature thresholds have moved as well. Uccle now averages fewer frost days and more warm days than it did under the older climate normal.

The rise in recorded sunshine is not explained by temperature alone. Improved regional air quality has also contributed to more solar radiation reaching the surface over recent decades.

Which Belgian Season Fits Different Types of Trips?

There is no single month that guarantees ideal weather everywhere in Belgium. The useful question is what kind of conditions suit the activity.

Common Weather Assumptions About Belgium That Need Context

Does It Rain All the Time in Belgium?

No. Rain can occur in every season, and wet weather is a regular part of the climate, but that is different from continuous rainfall. Dry spells can last for days or longer. The sharp contrast between the very wet 2024 and dry 2025 at Uccle shows just how variable Belgian rainfall can be.

Does Belgium Have a Rainy Season?

Not in the sense used for tropical climates. Precipitation is spread through the year. On a national average, winter is wetter than spring, with December normally the wettest month and April the driest, but rain remains possible throughout both.

Does Belgium Get Much Snow?

It depends heavily on location. Lowland cities can see snow without maintaining long-lasting snow cover. Higher parts of the Ardennes and especially the High Fens have colder conditions and a much better chance of snow remaining on the ground.

Are Belgian Summers Cool?

The long-term averages are moderate, but hot days are now a normal part of the climate. Inland temperatures can exceed 30°C during warm spells, while coastal temperatures may remain much lower when a sea breeze is active.

Is the Belgian Coast Always Warmer Than Brussels?
